The Royal Voluntary Service has launched its annual search for Diamond Champions

The Diamond Champion award acknowledges the dedication of volunteers over the age of 60, whose work makes a vital difference to the lives of others and raises the profile of the charities they work for.

Sixty Diamond Champions will be selected by a judging panel to receive a specially designed Diamond Champions pin and certificate signed by the Royal Voluntary Service’s Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall.

In addition, 12 Diamond Champions will be selected by an independent panel of judges and invited to attend a reception in the autumn.

But what makes a Diamond Champion?

Vida Lake, 65 from Omagh, Co Tyrone hosted a Big Jubilee Lunch in 2012  and was nominated as a Diamond Champion.

Vida volunteers with a number of organisations reaching across age groups and cultures. Her volunteering work includes being a school governor, being part of a management committee of a youth centre, helping individuals affected by the troubles, working in her local Oxfam shop and she provides transport for older adults and brings people to medical appointments, shopping and collecting prescriptions.

Vida was also involved in welcoming the Olympic Torch to Omagh and in The Queens Diamond Jubilee Beacon lighting ceremony. Vida brought The Big Lunch to her street when she organised a Big Jubilee Lunch, proving no matter how busy you are you can find time for a Big Lunch with the neighbours.

Vida was nominated because of the selfless way she serves the whole community and helps so many.
